albums
these are my favourite, and therefore the best, albums of all time. as much as i like some albums, these are the ones that I always come back to no matter what and I will never get bored of. I decided to only include one album per band because if not, this album would obviously be totally populated with beatles albums. Create your own Music List @ HotFreeLayouts! So 2006... The state of society right now probably isn't too good, as you may or may not have noticed. I'm not usually a pessimistic person but come on, we're going to hell in a handbasket here. There's obviously not one sole thing to place the blame on but I'll try and present a few options here. Setting aside the huge spike in natural disasters this past year, all probably due to the fact that Mother Nature is just pissed the fuck off at us and has decided to have some fun. I can't blame her. Anyways, there's really a problem around the world with guns. Not violence, guns. I don't believe there is anything inherently wrong with violence. Some people aren't the "use your words" type, and that's fine. If you've got a problem with someone and you need to solve it by punching them in the face, go ahead. It's not my thing but that's fine. Guns, like any weapons, are a coward's tool. Anyone can fire a gun, no matter how big or small or weak or strong. Where's the pride in that? You didn't do anything, a machine did. Good work. And 9 times out of 10, the intended target isn't hit, but some innocent bystander instead. And then they die. And they have nothing to do with it. Guns aren't cool, they aren't a status symbol and they aren't a joke. Which, unfortunately, is how they seem to be portrayed to many young people. I'm not talking about video games because I don't think they're a problem. At the end of the day, most people can distinguish fiction from reality and I'd bet that you'd find most gang members or perpetrators of gun violence don't play those games anyways. However, I find it very disturbing that so many mainstream rappers feel the need to glorify guns and being a "gangsta". I don't have much issue with early 90s gangsta rap because it didn't seem like they were glorifying or sugarcoating the culture, but just making a comment on the conditions they grew up/lived in. What I have a problem with is rappers like 50 Cent basing his whole career on how he got shot 9 times and didn't die. Or releasing albums titled "Get Rich Or Die Trying" or "Massacre". And I'm positive it's not just 50 Cent that does this, but he's the most visible. And I personally think it's unacceptable and should stop. I'm not against free speech or whatever, but this doesn't seem to have any sort of contribution to society in any way. It's merely disgusting and something should be done about it. Speaking about music, how dismal is it now? Sure, there are bright spots out there (I guess?), but overall it's pretty blah. That goes for mainstream and "indie" (read: mainstream jr.). Mainstream-wise, I don't get how songs like "Don't Cha" and "My Humps" can be popular. How can you take this stuff seriously? HOW CAN YOU TAKE IT AT ALL!?!? Honestly, are people getting dumber? I understand that fluff music has been around for decades, but come on!! My lovely lady lumps??! WHAT??? And mainstream rock is probably in a worse state. My Chemical Romance? Fall Out Boy? Why is it that I read articles stating how "innovative" these bands are when all of their songs sound the same and SOUND LIKE EACH OTHER!!! And indie shit-rock is no better. So many indie "stars" are such pussies that it's no wonder there hasn't been a real stand-out act for so long. If I hear another one of them cry about how they don't want to sell out or be famous or whatever, I'll scream! If you don't want to be a rock star and entertain as many people as you can, touch as many people's lives as you can, then get the fuck off the stage and go back to work at Starbuck's! Music's not about fame, that's very true. It's about "the music" but it's first and foremost about making others happy. That's what you're doing, you're an entertainer! So go and fucking entertain!! Stop crying!!!! And it's the indie "fans" too that make me equally as sick. They always whine and bitch about how their favourite band sold-out and "I just have a problem with them reaching so many people now. WAHHHHH!!!!!" Forgive me, but I guess they're not entitled to earn a living? Why can't other people enjoy the music just as you do? Those people, I'm convinced, are not music fans, but merely leeches. Or slugs. Or some disgusting mollusc of some sort. Anyways, back to the music-end of things. Honestly, I haven't heard some real rip-it-up rock n roll in a long time. So many of people's top albums in 2005 were so bland and boring, it was pathetic. I fully understand that I'm going off in a partially non-sensical rant here, but so many people do that here on LJ that I'm entitled once in a while. Bottom line: the first five years of the 21st century have sucked. I mean, not my life in particular, that was pretty fuckin' great. But that's because I seem to have different values than most other people. I'm not surgically attached to my cell phone, iPod, digicam, digipod, iCam, iDog, digisocks, iShoes, or whatever. I smile as much as I can, unlike the greater part of the population of Toronto and London. I, in the words of the late, great Richard Manuel "SPEND IT ALL!" Life's too short to be worried about the next uprgade to technology, where your paycheque will come from in 25 years, whether or not your new favourite band has lost its indie cred, or whatever else people seem to worry about. I worry too, but I try and not let it take over my life like so many people seem to do. I know I'm making judgements here but I believe that's allowed in order to make some sort of a point. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone because I'm not and no one is. However, I like to think I live my life differently than others, in a way that's kind of old-fashioned, but man is it a blast. So, 21st century? Shitty. I was born in the wrong time, kids. I know the 60s and early 70s had its problems too, but man give me that any day over this train wreck. Just give me something to believe in. I want some idealism. Give me something to work for, man. We need a hope. It's not cool to be so defeatist like so many people seem to be these days. Imagine all the people sharing all the world. All you need is love. Give peace a chance. If any of those statements elicit mocking laughter in you, I truly feel sorry for you. Idealistic? Yes. But no one has been able to tell me why that's a bad thing. And really... Just let me hear some of that rock and roll music! greetings
Hello all there in journal land! Well, I've certainly been MIA for sometime but alas, I have returned. Here's the story, morning glory. I'm doing well and living in London (UK) now studying music and generally having a grand ol' time. I got to visit Abbey Road back on John Lennon's birthday, I've seen Louis XIV, The Coral, BRMC, and Franz Ferdinand in concert, I've made some new friends, and I've smoked much too much smuggled/"imported" Canadian weed. Anyways, all is well here on this side of the Atlantic and it's not as rainy as I thought it would be. Not very cold at all, either. I sincerely hope everyone is well in their respective home countries and that your school years or whatever are going swimmingly. And now the big news...... Nay, the HUGE news.......... On Wednesday, I (Radical Ryan Fantastic) will have the privelge to meet................. (wait for it) PAUL FUCKING MCCARTNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, I am absoultely thrilled. I managed to obtain a wristband to a small book signing he's doing and it only took getting up at 5am! I honestly can't put into words how excited I am. I don't know what will happen once I'm actually there though. I guess time will tell. Not sure what I'll say. I'll think of some words of wisdom, though. HAH! Get it?!! It's a joke, son! Anyways, I will definitely report back as per the aftermath of this monumental encounter in both mine and Paul's lives. Good evening. i'll get you beer baron!
OK For those who don't live in Ontario, it seems that the LCBO is poised to go on strike on Thursday. The LCBO, if you don't know, is a government-controlled body responsible for the distribution of alcohol in Ontario. Despite what incredibly stupid people say, it is truly one of the most innovative and efficient liquor-distribution systems in the world. The selection we have here is unmatched and if privatization were to ever happen, that selection would go out the window. But the stupid people don't know that, as stupid people tend to be quite stupid. Anyways, it goes without saying that an LCBO strike would be bad for me since my dad imports beer and coolers. However, despite this I think a strike would be kind of interesting to see. Being in liquor stores the past few days working, I've seen a good amount of people clearly hoarding booze in anticipation of the strike. This seems pretty pathetic to me. Granted, I enjoy getting drunk as much as anyone. Scratch that, I probably enjoy it more, to the point that I can't really see in front of me and end up waking up with puke covering my bedroom wall. However, I could function without booze. Honestly, if full-on prohibition was announced tomorrow, I may even be a bit relieved; Give a break to the ol' liver, you know. But apparently most people can't even go two weeks at most without booze. Kinda sad... I know that the argument to what I'm saying is that most people are restauranteurs and that they'll lose business if they don't stock up on booze. I don't get that, either. I understand people like to enjoy some wine with dinner, but if that would actually stop them from going out, that seems a bit silly. You don't go out for the wine, you go out for the food, right? Food makes the restaurant, since they actually cook the food. They don't make the wine. Basically, what I'm somewhat appalled at is the dependence of Western society on alcohol. The fact that people can't go without hard liquor (beer and wine stores will remain open) for two weeks is a sad commentary on our society. Why not try something different? Alcohol is a poison, that's why some people, who shall remain nameless, puke five times in a public park within a one minute span only to wake up in the morning and puke all over my, er, "their" bathroom floor. Why not try weed. It's not poison, and apart from the possibility of lung cancer, it's not nearly as lethal. And the worst thing that could happen to you is that you'll fall asleep and then you may wake up a bit hazy. But this isn't a piece extolling the virtues of marijuana. I just would like to know why alcohol is so important to so many people that they feel the need to hoard it away. Oh well, maybe what this strike will do is weed out some more idiots who try to make their own liquor only to be (thankfully) killed in the process. I can only hope... Until next time...... not dead
I realise I said way back in February that I wasn't gonna be updating anymore. But I've actually decided to suspend my "blog" and maybe give some thought about writing here again. Even though LJ can be a bit annoying, it's nowhere near as stupid as the blogspt or myspace world. "Look at me! I can write what I think and have others judge me based on how cool my layout is and how many indie bands I listen to!!!" WOW!!!! Fuck off, really. Stop judging and stop begging to be judged. There are a few (very few) blogs that are actually worth reading (my friends' Nick, Brian, and Dallas, for a start), but for the most part, they're lame. There! I said it! HAH! Tonight I went to see War of the Worlds with Lisa. I love her very much. The movie was pretty good. No Star Wars, though. end communication Current Mood: crazyCurrent Music: Black Sabbath - Warning |

and in the end....
Well, we all knew it was coming. This represents pretty much my last entry in my LiveJournal. It's been a good ride the past two years but I think my lack of posting in the past many months indicates it's time for a change. So, from now on, I have established a blog at: http://bassically.blogspot.comI will definitely continue to read all the entries on my friends' page and comment when I have something to say. I know the blog thing is a bit cliché but it seems it will be a better place for me to get stuff down. And maybe more people can read it, who knows. I won't delete this account because I enjoy seeing my old entries sometimes. Although I may delete it when I move away to England. I may sometime compile a favourites list of my old entries, we'll see. But for the foreseeable future, this is it! continued...
Just to elaborate on my last post, I was walking in this small Mexican town we were in with my two new British friends and we walked by this outdoor restaurant. One of them goes, "Is that Anhtony Kiedis?" I didn't think it was because he had really long hair and was really tanned. But we walked back past him and IT WAS FUCKIN HIM!!!!!! So I went up to him and just thanked him for all the music and told him that I'd been listening since I was like 10, which is true. He was kinda iffy when we asked for a picture with him, which I can understand. But it was absolutely indredible. I had no idea what to say and I was surprised when something actually came out. It was amazing... Current Mood: hyperCurrent Music: RHCP - Universally Speaking |

OK... I've had enough of iPods. Seriously, I didn't care before because everyone's entitled to what they want. BUT! Why is it that so many iPod owners feel the need to carry it in their hands ALL THE TIME?!?! I understand by your ugly headphones that you have 500 dollars to piss away, you don't need to rub it in my face. And then there's all the accessories! They sell iPod "socks" for like 30 bucks! It's only a case!!! However, all these things do not affect me personally. This does: today when I went to eat breakfast, some older guy was plugged into his iPod and was standing in front of my chair. I said "excuse me" about 8 times to the point where I was screaming in the guys ear. I even tapped him and he still didn't move! So I pulled the goddamn earphone out of head and said MOVE. Then he moved. He seemed mad too, strangely. I know this could happen with just a normal CD player, but it's still angering. So, NO MORE IPODS!!!!! That's what I say. Just fuckin buy CDs. end communication Current Mood: frustratedCurrent Music: Pink Floyd - San Tropez |

pretend you're high on somethin...
Hello So I'm on the ship now. It's pretty fun. Cold-ish (relative) and windy outside but it's sunny so I can't complain. Plus there's no snow. That's quite the plus. Last night I went to the bar/dance club/whatever and it was actually really fun. First I met this cool couple from Colorado. Well, they go to school there. One's from California originally and the other's from Dallas. It was cool, they gave me one of their beers and we got to talking. That was fun. Then they left so I decided to stick around and I ended up meeting these super cool (yes, I'm a nerd) British guys and we all bought drinks for each other and what not. Danced a bit with some girls that were there, 'twas fun. It was hillarious though, they don't "let" you bring drinks on the dance floor, but get this, WE DID ANYWAYS! SNAP!! I actually got pretty drunk but I think it was accentuated by the boat moving. So overall, it was lots of fun. I'm gonna go sit on the top deck and play guitar. Happy Christmas! can't stand me now...
So I'm in LA now and we leave on Thursday for the cruise to Mexico. Should be fun. I was driving by this burger place here, Carl's Jr., and they had this new burger: the double pastrami burger. WHAT THE FUCK??? It's two burger patties with pastrami and cheese on top. How can someone even survive eating that? I guess that's why everyone in this country is so damn fat... OK, so I'm gonna do my best of 2004 list right now, bear with me. It's kinda tough this year because I got into a bunch of albums that weren't actually released in 2004 but I won't include those. what's goin on??
This is disgusting: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6597919/Now, I'm not Christian so I could have this all wrong. Why is Christmas now about buying things for people instead of spending time with family and trying to evaluate your place in life and treating people equally and such? I know people will say it's a trend of our commercial culture and blah, blah, blah, but those same people go out and buy presents for everyone. They have lists. Why?? What message does that send to the person you bought the gift for? "Here's a gift because I'm basically required to give it to you on this day. It's not that I neccessarily care about you but if I don't give this to you, then it actually looks like I don't care about you. Merry Christmas!!" Why do people wait until Christmas to do nice things for "loved" ones? Why do the same people wait until Valentine's Day to lavish attention and "love" upon their partners? It's not special, so don't think that it is. It's a duty. You have to buy Christmas presents. Why not just show your appreciation any other day of the year, you thoughtless sheep? I'm not saying that I'm guilty of the same things I'm condemning, but at least I realise it. And realisation is hopefully the first step to changing. I don't buy Christmas presents or Channukah presents. I try not to do anything for Valentine's Day. I've told my parents that I won't be acknowledging Mother's Day or Father's Day anymore and hopefully they'll learn to live with it. Coming back from that tangent, seeing those crowds of people at Wal-Mart just made me sick. I think it would be pretty cool if one person reading this didn't buy any Christmas presents this year but instead just spend time with the people you love and share your love with them instead of buying their approval. It's unlikely that will happen, but I can hope. I'll go back to stressing over my essay.... Current Mood: contemplativeCurrent Music: David Bowie - Young Americans |

from the editor
I was mistaken in posting what I did earlier this morning. In was an overreactionary measure on my part and I sincerely apologize. I'm sorry. Current Music: The Beatles - I've Got A Feeling |

this is ground control....
When I'm feeling a bit iffy, like sad or upset or anything but content, there are two bands that can break me out of it. Those are the Beatles and the Living End. I know that last choice is a bit weird. But really it always works! So here's a lesser known song that I was listening to earlier today that I thought was appropriate to post. Plus I just love the lyrics, quite funny-ish. Short NoticeI said I wanna see you I really meant I wanna leave you I said I wanna touch you I really meant I wanna punch you I said I wanna kiss you I’m never gonna miss you If you had a clue you would never stay If I told the truth I would have to say We’re going round, round, round Short notice – and now it’s time to go Misguided - shot down when you didn’t know Short notice – and now it’s time to go I said I wanna feel you I really meant I wanna kill you I said I couldn’t refuse you I really meant I should’ve used you I said, I wanna love you I really am above you OH!! And The Strokes too. They can snap me out of anything. How could I ever forget them?!?! This song rightchere is just amazing. Especially the lead in to the chorus. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about... Current Mood: complacentCurrent Music: The Strokes - Alone, Together |

ok...
I have to do something really difficult this week and I'm not sure if I should do it or not. I probably should because it'll probably be better in the long run but it's really hard. Oh well, I guess just suck it up and do it... First entry in months and it's all cryptic...haha... Current Mood: pensiveCurrent Music: The Verve - Sonnet |
